About State Theatre

State Theatre opened in 1929 as a grand picture palace designed by architect Henry White. Today it presents films, concerts, comedy and live theatre, and has been the home of the Sydney Film Festival since 1974.

Getting there

Train: Town Hall and St James are the nearest train stations.

Light rail: QVB is the nearest light rail stop.

Car: The theatre recommends QVB Car Park, entered from York Street; theatre patrons can have eligible evening and weekend parking validated at the Theatre Manager’s Office.

Accessibility

Accessible seating and a hearing loop are available on the Mezzanine, and the venue is a Companion Card affiliate. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available in the adjoining hotel with staff assistance. Other auditorium levels involve stairs: contact the box office to request accessibility tickets and discuss the most suitable seating before your visit.

Access arrangements can change, so please confirm with the venue before you go.

Where to sit

The State Theatre has three levels: the Stalls at stage level, the Mezzanine Lounge above them, and the Dress Circle at the top. The Dress Circle has a front section (rows A to J) and an upper section (rows K to P), and there are more steps once you're inside it. If stairs are a problem, the theatre suggests the Mezzanine, which has very few; the wheelchair seating and hearing loop are there too.

Layouts change from show to show, so check the seating map when you book.
