About Southbank Theatre

Southbank Theatre is the principal home of Melbourne Theatre Company, on Southbank Boulevard in Melbourne's Arts Precinct next to the Melbourne Recital Centre. Designed by ARM Architecture and opened in 2009, it has two performance spaces: the 559-seat Sumner and the Lawler, a flexible black-box studio seating 163. It presents most of MTC's annual season, along with play readings, education performances and work by other companies that hire the venue.

Getting there

Tram: St Kilda Road routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 stop at the Arts Precinct stop, about a five-minute walk away. Route 1 also runs down Southbank Boulevard and stops on Sturt Street outside the Melbourne Recital Centre, next door to the theatre.

Train: Flinders Street Station is within easy walking distance. Walk south down St Kilda Road, away from the CBD, or catch a southbound tram from the Flinders Street Station/Federation Square stop.

Car: Melbourne Theatre Company recommends Wilson Parking's Southgate, Riverside Quay, Eureka and Flinders Gate car parks, with special rates when you prepay online.
