About Capitol Theatre Melbourne

The Capitol is a 1924 cinema and theatre at 113 Swanston Street, opposite Melbourne Town Hall, owned and run by RMIT University. Designed by Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin, it was Victoria's first extravagant picture palace and is regarded as the Griffins' greatest interior design work. RMIT restored and reopened it in 2019, and the theatre now seats about 570 for screenings, performances, talks and festivals.

Getting there

Tram: Stop 6 Town Hall/Collins Street (routes 11, 12, 48 and 109) and stop 11 Collins Street/Swanston Street (routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72).

Train: About a five-minute walk from Flinders Street or Melbourne Central stations.

Car: Metered and timed parking is on nearby streets, and there are several car parks close by, including Federation Square car park.

Accessibility

Enter the Capitol Arcade from Swanston Street or Howie Place and take the lift halfway along the arcade to the Foyer level; a separate lift inside serves the Theatre, Salon and Lounge levels. The theatre has eight wheelchair spaces with eight companion seats, four reached from the Foyer level and four from the Salon level by lift. Wheelchair-accessible toilets with baby change are on the Foyer level, and a hearing loop covers the whole building. Accessible parking is on Little Collins and surrounding streets, and at Federation Square car park.

Access arrangements can change, so please confirm with the venue before you go.

Where to sit

The Capitol has one level of seating. In the 1960s the original Stalls were removed to make way for the Capitol Arcade, so today's theatre fills the upper half of the 1924 auditorium. Stairs from the Foyer lead to the front, middle and rear sections, and a second entrance from the Salon level opens into the centre. There are eight wheelchair spaces with companion seats: four at the front, reached from the Foyer level, and four in the centre, reached by lift from the Salon.

Layouts change from show to show, so check the seating map when you book.
