About Seymour Centre

Seymour Centre is the University of Sydney’s performing arts centre, on the corner of City Road and Cleveland Street in Chippendale. Funded by a bequest from businessman Everest York Seymour and opened in 1975, it has three theatres, the York (780 seats), the Everest and the Reginald, plus the Sound Lounge. It presents theatre, music, comedy and festival events and houses facilities for the university’s music department.

Getting there

Train: Redfern Station is a 10-minute walk via Ivy Street. Central Station is about a 20-minute walk via Cleveland Street.

Bus: A bus stop outside the centre on City Road has frequent services throughout the day.

Car: The Shepherd Street car park costs $4 an hour (maximum $24) and is paid through the CellOPark app or the pay station. Limited free parking is available at the university and in surrounding streets.

Accessibility

Lifts serve all levels and wheelchair seating is available in all venues, with an adjacent seat for a companion; tell the Box Office when booking. Fully accessible toilets are on the ground floor, and over-ear hearing loops are available in the Everest and York theatres for some shows. Three accessible parking spaces are on Maze Crescent, and the Shepherd Street car park has lifts and a ramped path to the Lower Foyer. Seymour is a Companion Card affiliate; call (02) 7255 1561.

Access arrangements can change, so please confirm with the venue before you go.

Where to sit

The York Theatre, the largest, seats 781 in a semi-circle of raked seating around a thrust stage, so the audience sits on three sides. There are only 12 rows, from Row A at the stage to Row M at the back. You come in at the back and walk down, and Row M is the only row with level access.

The Everest Theatre seats 505 facing a traditional proscenium stage, in a centre block with angled side blocks running from Row A to Row T. Rows A to E are on the flat and the rake starts at Row F. The sound booth sits in the middle of the back two rows.

The Reginald Theatre is a 148-seat black box with a retractable raked seating bank, Rows A to J, and you enter at the front by Row A. The Sound Lounge is a 120-seat cabaret-style room with a small raised stage.

Layouts change from show to show, so check the seating map when you book.
