About National Theatre Melbourne

The National Theatre is a heritage-listed 783-seat theatre on the corner of Carlisle and Barkly streets in St Kilda. The building opened in 1921 as the Victory Theatre, a 3,000-seat cinema, and reopened in 1974 as a live theatre. Run by the not-for-profit The National, Melbourne, it is also home to The National Ballet School and The National Drama School, and hosts musicals, theatre, dance and live music.

Getting there

Tram: Routes 16 and 3a stop outside the theatre at Stop 33. Route 96 stops at Luna Park, a 350-metre walk away.

Train: Balaclava Station is about a 15-minute walk (1.2 kilometres).

Car: Street and commercial parking is available nearby; check signage. The closest multi-storey paid parking is at Acland Court on Barkly Street.

Accessibility

The auditorium is two levels above the street. A staff-operated lift goes to the mezzanine, then a stairclimber (200 kg limit, not suitable for large motorised wheelchairs) reaches Row J, the flat-floor row best for wheelchair users (seats J6 to 9 and J44 to 47). The only accessible toilet is on the mezzanine. A hearing assistance system is available from the box office, and Companion Cards are accepted for internally ticketed events. Contact the box office on (03) 9525 4611 before booking.

Access arrangements can change, so please confirm with the venue before you go.
