About Melbourne Town Hall

Completed in 1870, Melbourne Town Hall is a heritage civic building at the corner of Swanston and Collins streets. It remains a centre for civic and cultural activity, hosting talks, live music, exhibitions and celebrations; its enlarged auditorium contains a grand organ refurbished in 2001, with almost 8,000 pipes across three levels.

Getting there

Tram: Melbourne Town Hall/Collins Street, Stop 6, is served by routes 11, 12, 48 and 109. City Square/Swanston Street, Stop 11, is also nearby.

Train: Flinders Street is the closest railway station.

Car: Parking is not provided at the Town Hall. An official City of Melbourne event guide recommends Wilson Parking at 180 Russell Street, about a five-minute walk away.

Accessibility

For step-free entry, use the copper doors on Swanston Street to the left of the main steps, then take the lift to Level 1. The venue is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet; City of Melbourne’s Town Hall tour information also lists mobility access, service animals and Companion Card acceptance. Event-specific seating and booking arrangements should be confirmed with the presenter.

Access arrangements can change, so please confirm with the venue before you go.

Where to sit

The Main Hall has two seating sections, the Stalls and the Balcony. In the Comedy Festival layout, Stalls rows A to K are on the flat floor and rows L to X rise up a raked seating bank behind them, with the Balcony (rows AA to KK) upstairs. There's a lift to the Balcony, but most Balcony seats still need a few steps. Layouts can change between events, so check the seating map when you book.
