Why Australians miss last-minute theatre and concert ticket deals (and how to catch them)
By the TIX team · Updated
Most people miss last-minute deals on live event tickets because the offers are short-lived, limited to particular dates or seats, and released with little notice – usually to mailing-list subscribers or on deals platforms rather than on the main ticket page. To catch them, get alerts, stay flexible on date and seat, and check the offer conditions quickly.
Why last-minute deals are easy to miss
They don't last long
Promoters release discounts when sales for a performance are behind target. Once enough seats sell, the offer stops – sometimes within days.
They're limited to certain dates and seats
A deal might only apply to Tuesday-to-Thursday performances, a matinee, or B and C reserve. If you search for a Saturday night in A reserve, you won't see it.
They're not always on the main ticket page
Many offers go to mailing lists, member programs and deals platforms first. That's how Lasttix deals work: they're listed on TIX and announced to subscribers, then booked with the official ticket seller.
Popular shows rarely drop
Australians are buying more live event tickets than ever – Live Performance Australia reported record attendance of 31.4 million in 2024 – so the biggest shows often sell out without discounts. A federal parliamentary inquiry also heard that audiences are buying tickets later, which adds uncertainty for promoters about when, and whether, to discount.
Live events aren't like flights
Airfares tend to rise closer to departure. Live performances are different: an empty seat earns nothing once the show starts, so seats that remain unsold are more likely to be discounted.
How to catch last-minute deals
- Get alerts. Join the free TIX mailing list to hear about new Lasttix deals as they go live.
- Check deals pages often. tix.com.au/deals lists current offers, and new ones are added as promoters release them.
- Be flexible. Weeknights, matinees and the final weeks of a season are the most likely to have offers.
- Read the conditions quickly. Check which dates and price reserves are included before choosing seats.
- Book through the official seller. TIX links you to the authorised seller so the offer is applied at checkout.
In mid-October 2026, 18 of the 38 shows on sale on TIX had a Lasttix deal. Related: why live show tickets cost so much in Australia.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Australians miss out on last-minute discount ticket deals?
Because live event deals are short-lived, often limited to specific dates or seat reserves, and frequently sent to subscribers or listed on deals platforms rather than shown on the main ticket page. Getting alerts and being flexible with date and seat make the biggest difference.
When do last-minute theatre deals usually appear?
Typically in the days or weeks before a performance when sales are behind target, and often for weeknight, matinee and final-weeks performances.
Where can I find last-minute event tickets in Australia?
TIX lists current last-minute and limited-time Lasttix deals across Australia at tix.com.au/deals and links to the official ticket seller to book. Arts companies' rush and day-of tickets are also worth checking.
Are last-minute tickets always cheaper?
No. Popular shows can sell out without any discount. Discounts are most likely for performances that haven't sold out.
