About the event

Blackrock by award-winning playwright Nick Enright is a stunning exploration of Australian youth culture, our viewing of women in society and what it is to be a 'man'.

It’s Toby Ackland’s birthday party down near the surf club – and that should mean heaps of grog, drugs and good clean fun. But by the morning a young girl is dead – raped by three boys and bashed with a rock.

Blackrock won the AWGIE Award for best play in 1996 and was developed into a feature film in 1997. Confronting when it premiered in 1995, its power has only amplified in the ensuing decades.

Australian playwright Nick Enright is famous for his stage works such as A Man With Five Children, Cloudstreet, The Boy From Oz and the Academy Award-nominated screenplay, Lorenzo’s Oil. The play was adapted from the original 1992 play A Property of the Clan, which was inspired by the murder of Leigh Leigh in Stockton.
